Lake Maxinkuckee is located in North Central Indiana, Marshall County approximate to the town of Culver. It is the second largest natural lake within the state of Indiana, and is 88 feet (27 meters) deep at its deepest spot, and an average depth of 24 feet (7 meters) and miles wide. It is a glacial, spring fed lake measuring 1864 acres (8 km2). History suggests the first inhabitants of the are were Mound Building Native Americans, probably the Potawatomi or Miami. The first white settlers came in 1836 and founded Uniontown which was renamed Marmont. The town finally adopted the name of Culver after Henry Harrison Culver founded the Culver Military Academy in 1894. The lake is located approximately 45 miles south of South Bend and can be found near the intersections of Indiana State Roads 10 and 17.
Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee boasts several famous authors to have graced its shores- Merideth Nicholson, Gene Stratton Porter and Kurt Vonnegut. The Vonnegut family still has several houses on Lake Max.
